A day at the beach
Some images shot on a day of walking on our most natural beaches, to be found at De Panne (Belgian Westcoast).
Upon arrival we noticed very high densities of the lugworm, Arenicola marina
The lugworm or sandworm, Arenicola marina, is a large marine worm. It's droppings are a familiar sight on a beach at low tide but the animal itself is rarely seen except by those who dig the worm out of the sand.
Lugworms play a vital role in the beach ecosystem, by pumping oxygen into the otherwise anoxic soils...
Thousands of lugworms on the beach
The barrel jellyfish, Rhizostoma pulmo is our biggest species of jelly
Then we went further up the dunes
to finally stumble upon some colour
