About Karl

Who am I

Karl Van Ginderdeuren studied Biology studies at the University of Ghent, in Belgium.

He gained scientific experience as a biologist in three institutes, mostly working on projects regarding impact on the marine environment. He worked on land as well as on research vessels and vessels of different marine sectors. This yielded him the degree of Doctor in Science as well as a large collection of marine images from all around the world. In March 2014 he started working for Roche Diagnostics, combining scientific lab knowledge with commercial interests. Later working at Medtronic in the Medical robotics field.
As a hobby Karl gets his kicks from travelling towards remote areas in search of a good picture. What he loves doing most is tracking down illusive mammals. He has spent many weeks in photo hides, waiting for animals often not showing up.

Further, Karl has been guiding groups of mammal watchers and nature photographers in Europe, South America, Asia, the Himalayas and both polar areas. He often works with Pieter-Jan D'Hondt, of whom he learned a lot. Most of the bat pictures on this side were taken together with PJ.

Karl, when asked about photography as a hobby: I did not take any lessons in photography so I learn the hard way. This means a lot of trial and error. You do not take a photograph, you make it, Ansel Adams once said. To me this implies that taking a picture includes a thinking process, which every photographer has to develop. This takes many years or more probably, decades.

The plan

Seeing all the countries is a lot.
Seeing all the birds or mammals as well. I have never even kept track of the species I have seen. So this is not a must...
But you can try to visit all continents and spend time in Earth's major ecosystems. I find this a big motivation to try and experience the large biomes and some of their flagship species. And to experience them in a way that you better understand their ecology.
The goal is to share that enthusiasm with others, by teaching/inspiring people about the ecology and protection of these wildernesses. That is why I like guiding.

I have partnered up with STARLING Reizen for many years, and I organize the Starling PAAIPLAATS podcast.

Equipment

A lot of people ask about the equipment I use.

I have always been a Nikon user. Currently mainly use 600mm, 80-400mm, 70-200mm, 18-35mm. Camera is Z8.
Bins and scopes vary between brands: Swarovski bins, Leica or Nikon scope, sometimes varying with Kite Equipment from STARLING.
